A comparative analysis of self-esteem, school involvement, family cohesiveness and academic achievement in seventh and eighth graders dependent upon their relative age.

A comparative analysis of self-esteem, school involvement, family cohesiveness and academic achievement in seventh and eighth graders dependent upon their relative age.

$69

Although the relatively young represent approximately 50% of a given classroom, there is very little research on their mental health, and thus they represent an understudied population. Being relatively young puts children at a higher risk for experiencing short- and long-term negative consequences including lower scores on self-esteem measures throughout their academic career (Thompson et al, 2004) and a higher rate of suicide (Thompson et al, 1999). This study sought to add to this literature by looking at between group differences on measures of cognitive, affective and behavioral outcomes for this understudied and vulnerable group. The research participants were 47 middle school 7th and 8th graders from an affluent Long Island, NY suburban community. Generally, the hypotheses investigated held that the difficulties encountered by the relatively younger child during their academic careers would be evident in lower global self-esteem scores on the Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory, 3rd Edition (CFSEI-III; Battle, 2002), a higher score on the cohesion subscale of the Family Environment Scale (FES; Moos & Moos, 1986), a lower level of participation in extracurricular activities, and lower scores on measures of English and math achievement. The sample size of 47 was not adequate to detect a large effect at the .05 level for this type of study (Cohen, 1992); there were no significant differences between the two groups for any comparison. Specifically, younger 7 th and 8th graders report the same level of self-esteem, perceptions of family cohesiveness, and level of extracurricular activities as relatively older 7th and 8th graders. Additionally, the academic achievement of the relatively younger groups was not significantly different from the relatively older group on tests of English and math proficiency. Although these findings were not in line with other research it is important to understand that these children should be considered to be an “at risk” group for

Academic persistence of Native American undergraduates.

Academic persistence of Native American undergraduates.

$69

This study examined the relationships between non-cognitive factors and the academic persistence decisions of 158 (65 men and 93 women) Native American undergraduates. Of this sample, 82 identified as Navajo. In addition to sex of participants, this study examined self-beliefs, university comfort, and ethnic identity. The self-beliefs cluster consisted of educational self-efficacy and self-esteem. University comfort included college stress, university environment, and cultural congruity. Aspects of ethnic identity were centrality, private regard, and public regard. The study's measurement tools included the Persistence/Voluntary Dropout Decisions Scale, the Educational Degree Behaviors Self-Efficacy Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the University Environment Scale, the Daily Hassles Index for College Stress Scale, the Cultural Congruity Scale, and the Multidimensional Inventory for Black Identity Scale—Modified. Tinto's model of factors related to persistence, Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, Garrett's bicultural identity development model, and Seller et al.'s racial identity development model served as the study's theoretical foundation. Examination of the correlations among the outcome variables revealed positive correlations between self-esteem and educational self-efficacy, between university environment and cultural congruity, and between private regard and centrality and pubic regard. Academic stress was negatively related to university environment and cultural congruity. The test of hypothesis one revealed that male and female students differed only on private regard, with Native women having higher private regard than Native men. Correlations testing hypothesis two revealed that self-esteem and educational self-efficacy were significantly related to two of the three ethnic identity measures. When sex of participant was examined, educational self-efficacy was related to private regard and centrality for

Developing Self-Esteem Through Connections to Music

Developing Self-Esteem Through Connections to Music

$60

The goal of this mixed method research was to determine the effects of learning to play the ukulele on the self-esteem of Grade 3 students. Administration of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, parent surveys, anecdotal evidence, and oral and written student reflections were used during the 6 month instructional period. The research also investigated the effects of instruction on academic abilities and attendance and questioned whether this instruction is possible for an average elementary teacher with no formal music background. Student and parental feedback indicated increased student confidence, risk- taking, pride and responsibility, in addition to learning to play a new instrument. Although quantitative data did not substantiate the qualitative data, the pressure of standardized testing appeared to affect a student’s attitude towards school. Attendance improved significantly during the testing period. More research needs to be conducted to investigate the effects of standardized testing on self-esteem of not only students, but also teachers.

Differences between perfectionism groups in psychosocial and emotional adjustment among people with disabilities.

Differences between perfectionism groups in psychosocial and emotional adjustment among people with disabilities.

$62.72

This study investigated differences among three perfectionism groups in various psychosocial and emotional adjustment indicators among people with disabilities. Previous research empirically supported the classification of the three perfectionism groups (maladaptive perfectionists, adaptive perfectionists, and nonperfectionists) in college student populations. It was predicted that among people with disabilities, results would parallel previous research in that the maladaptive perfectionists would perform significantly worse than the adaptive perfectionists in various assessments of adjustment, with the nonperfectionists scoring midway between these two groups.;Participants included 197 individuals with disabilities who completed the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised, the Adaptation to Disability Scale-Revised, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory, the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Two MANCOVAs were conducted controlling for time since onset of disability, gender, and perfectionist group x gender interaction. The first MANCOVA was performed using perfectionist grouping as the between-subjects factor and the perfectionism subscales as the dependent variables. Results indicated that perfectionist grouping had a significant main effect on the dependent variables. Univariate ANOVAs revealed statistically significant group differences on each perfectionism subscale. The second MANCOVA used perfectionist grouping as the between-subjects factor and the adjustment indicators as the dependent variables. Perfectionist grouping had a significant main effect on the dependent variables. Univariate ANOVAs indicated statistically significant group differences on the adjustment variables. Overall, the maladaptive perfectionists scored significantly higher on negative adjustment (depression and negative affect) and significantly lower on positive adjustment (disability

The Effects of Camp Interventions on Adolescent Self-Esteem

The Effects of Camp Interventions on Adolescent Self-Esteem

$61

Research suggests that the active protection and promotion of self-esteem is critical to mental and social well being and plays an important role as a protective and non specific risk factor in physical and mental health. Youth problems such as poor academic achievement, risky sexual behavior, insolence, drug and alcohol abuse, psychological distress and delinquency have been associated with low self-esteem. Many programs have been designed to increase self esteem in children and adolescents, however, few have so far been assessed for their effectiveness. Thus, a study consisting of 98 children and young adolescents aged 8-15 years has been conducted to investigate whether a specialized self-esteem building program held in a camp environment in Western Australia had the desired effects. The program primarily utilises goal setting techniques, self regulation and positive peer and educator encouragement as a method to increase perceived self-esteem in participants. Results based on the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory showed significant long term effects of the measure shortly after completion of camp and at a three week follow up investigation.
