Academic persistence of Native American undergraduates.

Academic persistence of Native American undergraduates.

$69

This study examined the relationships between non-cognitive factors and the academic persistence decisions of 158 (65 men and 93 women) Native American undergraduates. Of this sample, 82 identified as Navajo. In addition to sex of participants, this study examined self-beliefs, university comfort, and ethnic identity. The self-beliefs cluster consisted of educational self-efficacy and self-esteem. University comfort included college stress, university environment, and cultural congruity. Aspects of ethnic identity were centrality, private regard, and public regard. The study's measurement tools included the Persistence/Voluntary Dropout Decisions Scale, the Educational Degree Behaviors Self-Efficacy Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the University Environment Scale, the Daily Hassles Index for College Stress Scale, the Cultural Congruity Scale, and the Multidimensional Inventory for Black Identity Scale—Modified. Tinto's model of factors related to persistence, Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, Garrett's bicultural identity development model, and Seller et al.'s racial identity development model served as the study's theoretical foundation. Examination of the correlations among the outcome variables revealed positive correlations between self-esteem and educational self-efficacy, between university environment and cultural congruity, and between private regard and centrality and pubic regard. Academic stress was negatively related to university environment and cultural congruity. The test of hypothesis one revealed that male and female students differed only on private regard, with Native women having higher private regard than Native men. Correlations testing hypothesis two revealed that self-esteem and educational self-efficacy were significantly related to two of the three ethnic identity measures. When sex of participant was examined, educational self-efficacy was related to private regard and centrality for

Differences between perfectionism groups in psychosocial and emotional adjustment among people with disabilities.

Differences between perfectionism groups in psychosocial and emotional adjustment among people with disabilities.

$69

This study investigated differences among three perfectionism groups in various psychosocial and emotional adjustment indicators among people with disabilities. Previous research empirically supported the classification of the three perfectionism groups (maladaptive perfectionists, adaptive perfectionists, and nonperfectionists) in college student populations. It was predicted that among people with disabilities, results would parallel previous research in that the maladaptive perfectionists would perform significantly worse than the adaptive perfectionists in various assessments of adjustment, with the nonperfectionists scoring midway between these two groups.;Participants included 197 individuals with disabilities who completed the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised, the Adaptation to Disability Scale-Revised, the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory, the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Two MANCOVAs were conducted controlling for time since onset of disability, gender, and perfectionist group x gender interaction. The first MANCOVA was performed using perfectionist grouping as the between-subjects factor and the perfectionism subscales as the dependent variables. Results indicated that perfectionist grouping had a significant main effect on the dependent variables. Univariate ANOVAs revealed statistically significant group differences on each perfectionism subscale. The second MANCOVA used perfectionist grouping as the between-subjects factor and the adjustment indicators as the dependent variables. Perfectionist grouping had a significant main effect on the dependent variables. Univariate ANOVAs indicated statistically significant group differences on the adjustment variables. Overall, the maladaptive perfectionists scored significantly higher on negative adjustment (depression and negative affect) and significantly lower on positive adjustment (disability
