Raising your child’s self esteem
Self esteem is a value judgment that a person places on themselves, but there are a host of factors that will influence one’s judgment of their self-worth. Developing positive self-esteem is extremely important. How one thinks about oneself impacts the way one acts. If feeling positive about her self-worth, a child is much more likely to act in a positive manner. Likewise, negative feelings about oneself can impart negative actions towards self and others.
Luckily, a parent, teacher or other influential adult has a great impact on a child’s self-esteem and there are a variety of simple things that will help improve a child’s self-esteem.
Recognize your child’s effort. A child will feel proud of their accomplishments and efforts when it is recognized. This can be seen in children who say “watch this, watch this, mommy!” The utter excitement at what they can do is their own, however they wish to share that with those who love them, and if the response is equally positive, this reinforces their own sense of self-worth.
Try to be available. Be present to your child and pay attention to their successes and failures and show empathy for their frustrations. A child who feels heard and realizes that their emotions and reactions are important to the people they love will have a higher sense of self esteem.
Ask your child questions. Not only does this engage the child’s interest and open up an avenue of further discovery, but it allows the child to feel part of a positive relationship where you are genuinely interested in what they want to know and pursue. Also, involve your child in day to day decisions that intimately affect them. “What would you like to do today? Does the library sound better or would you prefer to go to the park.” Be willing to include their wishes in your day. This gives children a sense of autonomy and self-importance as a part of the family.
Allow your child to pursue something that interests them, be it a sport, music lessons or acting classes.
Child acting
is an underused avenue to supporting and promoting positive self-esteem in children.
A school such as John Robert Powers offers
acting classes
and modeling opportunities which encourage positive self-esteem to fully emerge. John Robert Powers classes can be found at http://www.jrplongisland.com. When a child has an outlet for their creative energy and gains a positive response from other adults, children and audiences, their self-esteem sky-rockets.

Self Esteem a Family Affair $3.58 Strong self-esteem is a critical ingredient for human happiness–and its development begins at home in the nurturing interactions between children and adults. Clarke’s unique approach to building self-esteem begins with her belief that this is indeed a "family affair." Rather than offering collection of dictatorial "shoulds," "Self-Esteem: A Family Affair" instead serves as a source of parental support, providing a broad range of imaginative and effective suggestions for dealing with individual family members in ways that nourish self-esteem for all involved. Throughout her book, Clarke encourages parents to claim their strengths and to trust their judgment as they make decisions about appropriate child care. Recognizing, too, that kids’ needs are best met by adults whose own needs have not been neglected, Clarke offers a range of creative and workable options for parents to build the self-esteem of children while also caring for their emotional needs. Jean Illsley Clarke, author of Hazelden’s "Growing Up Again: Parenting Ourselves, Parenting Our Children, " is a writer and an internationally recognized parent educator who specializes in the areas of parenting, self-esteem, family dynamics, and adult children of alcoholics. She currently directs the Self-Esteem Center, which she founded in 1975, and lives in Plymouth, Minnesota. |

The Social Importance of Self-Esteem $3.46 Is the well-being of a society dependent on the well-being of its citizenry? Does individual self-esteem play a causal role in chronic social problems such as child abuse, school drop-out rates, teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drug abuse, welfare dependency? In an attempt to answer these questions, the State of California established a task force on self-esteem and social responsibility in 1987. The aim of this body was to determine what connections might exist between these two factors and to suggest policy guidelines relating to the welfare of Californians and to the expenditure of public resources. The ten essays in this volume, prepared by faculty members of the University of California, draw on research in the social and behavioral sciences to explore these issues. They assess the substantive assertions and research findings in the field and make careful evaluations of their reliability and validity. In many cases strong connections between self-esteem and problematic behavior are established, in others the connections are weak, and in some the causal relationship is, as yet, imperfectly understood. One of the conclusions of the book is that research on these issues needs to be improved, particularly in the areas of comparative and longitudinal studies. Guidelines for future research are suggested, and some points of policy direction are elaborated. These essays may indeed promote additional research, for the premise that social stability and welfare are largely dependent on the psychological state of a people poses a challenging and provocative counter-emphasis to the assumption that social institutions are the primary determinants of individual welfare. |
